Cast a Deadly Spell
Date: 11/12/2020 Viewed: HBO Max First Viewing Note: I got a free trial for HBO Max and I felt like this was a good choice to start off my subscription with. I never saw this movie until now, but I do remember hearing about it growing up. I remember they would play this movie on TV late at night and every video store had a copy of this movie when I was a kid in the mid-late 90s. I do wish that I saw this movie as a kid because I would have loved it. This movie is awesome and I consider it to be an underrated gem in my opinion. Cast a Deadly Spell is a very enjoyable movie that has a very fun and creative story. I love the world-building that this movie has because it is like classic film noir, but with demons, witches, and other types of monsters. I'm surprised that this movie was a direct to TV movie because it does not feel like a TV movie at all. You have awesome practical effects that look pretty good and not cheap looking. This movie feels like it could have been a mainstream Hollywood movie in my opinion. Not to mention, the character designs for the monsters are really cool looking too. The acting is solid and Fred Ward (Tremors) does a great job of playing a badass character that does not use magic to fight against his opponents. Fred Ward's character uses his own tactical skills instead of using cheap tricks to solve detective cases. You also have solid performances from Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption) and Juliane Moore (Boogie Nights) that are noteworthy as well. I also love the atmosphere and the camera work because it makes the movie feel so unique. You also have a great soundtrack that feels right at home during the 1940s. I was surprised that Martin Campbell directed this movie because he would later direct the two best James Bond movies and one of the worst superhero movies of the 2010s. I don't have anything bad to say about this movie other than the movie did have a slow start and some of the humor was not very funny. Overall, Cast a Deadly Spell is an awesome movie and I do recommend checking it out. It bothers me that this movie has no Blu-Ray release because this movie would have a nice spot in my collection.

Creep
Date: 11/9/2020 Viewed: Netflix First Viewing Note: I have been curious to check out this movie for a while now because people have recommended it to me before. I didn't bother with this movie when it came out in 2014-2015 because I was so sick of the found footage genre at the time. From 2008-2016, it seems like found footage movies were all over the place. Seeing that I had nothing else to do, I decided to watch it on Netflix. After watching it on Netflix, I like it. Creep was a surprisingly good movie in my opinion. This movie is shorter than your normal movie seeing that it only runs at 77 minutes and not 90+ minutes. The movie didn't felt short at all and it was able to tell a good story from start to finish without feeling rushed. I like how this movie starts off as nice and innocent before it goes into a darker direction. Patrick Brice (The director) did a wonderful job of creating a suspenseful atmosphere that will have you on the edge of your seat. Everyone did a good job of playing believable characters and Mark Duplass (The One I Love) as Josef was fantastic as the creepy stalker. Josef seems like a nice guy that is lonely and strange but has a dark hidden agenda deep down inside of him. The only thing that I didn't like about this movie is the dumb character decisions that the main character did in the movie. You also have some plot holes that made me scratch my head at times. I still recommend this movie if you enjoy found footage movies or horror thrillers.

Mark of the Astro-Zombies
Date: 11/9/2020 Viewed: Youtube First Viewing Note: I have seen the original Astro-Zombies movie a few times before and I do like it for being a "So bad, it's good" type of movie. I never saw the other movies in the franchise until now. I also have a huge soft spot for Ted V. Mikels because his movies are enjoyable for the wrong reasons. This movie is a soft remake similar to how The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014) was. After watching this movie for the first time on Youtube, I enjoy it for all the wrong reasons. Just like the original Astro-Zombies movie, it's so bad it's good. I found myself laughing multiple times when watching this movie for how stupid this movie was. The acting is laughable and the special effects are so cheap looking. The main villain in this movie is a reptilian creature that looks like a rejected 80s Saturday morning cartoon villain. You even have Ted V. Mikels trying to run for President of the United States in this movie which is also pretty funny (insert Trump joke here). The movie has a shot on video feel to it because the movie looks like it was made in the 80s and somehow released in the early-mid 2000s. It's also funny how everyone in the White House is taking everything so seriously. I can't even tell if Ted V. Mikels is trying to do a political satire or not. I do wish they did a better job on the kills because the death scenes in this movie are pretty repetitive. Slasher movies need to be more creative than just stabbing people in the gut and cutting people's throats. The pacing does hurt this movie because it can move very slow at times despite having a 90 minute run time. If you enjoy bad movies such as The Room (2003) or Birdemic (2010), I do recommend checking out this movie.

Bag Boy Lover Boy
Date: 11/5/2020 Viewed: TubiTV First Viewing Note: I never heard of this movie until someone mentioned it in the Severin Films Facebook group. Seeing that it's free to watch on Tubi (As of 11/5/2020), I decided to sit down and watch it. After watching this movie for the first time, I really enjoy it. I'm really impressed with how they are able to make a dark and sleazy movie set in a post-9/11 New York City. Andres Torres did a wonderful job of creating a modern grindhouse movie in my opinion with the movie taking inspiration from Maniac (1980), Double Exposure (1982), and Bad Boy Bubby (1992). I even love the scuzzy feeling of being inside the character's bedroom. The story is not going to win any Oscars, but I do love how entertaining the story is. I found myself being invested in the story and I was intrigued to see what direction that the story was heading to. The main character in this movie is very interesting because he wants to create art and he takes his hobby way too far. There is a message in this movie about when someone crosses the line of creating art. Jon Wachter gives a really good performance as the main character because he plays a lonely normal everyday guy who is slightly off. Everyone else in this movie does a good job for the most part. I also love how funny this movie is too. I found myself laughing hard multiple times when watching this movie. The only thing that I didn't like about this movie is that it is too short. I do wish the movie was a bit longer because another 10-20 minutes would have added more to the story. Bag Boy Lover Boy is not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but I do recommend it to people who enjoy 80s grindhouse movies, or movies about lonely weird people such as Chocolate Strawberry Vanilla (2013).

Across the Universe
Date: 11/4/2020 Viewed: Amazon Prime Rental Re-Watch Note: To be honest, I never like this movie as most people do. The last time when I saw this movie when it came out on DVD back when I was in High School and I remember I was like "This movie is alright". 13 years later and my opinion is still the same. I do get why many people like this movie, but this movie is not for me. I can never get into the story and characters in this movie. This movie is way too long for a movie that is supposed to have an incoherent story. I always get bored after an hour into this movie and it ends up becoming background noise. However, I do like the message that this movie has by having an anti-Vietnam War message and the acting is great. It was even cool to see Arabella Holzbog from Carnosaur 2 (1995) in this movie. The Cinematography from Bruno Delbonnel (Amรฉlie) is absolutely beautiful in my opinion. Everything about this movie is very pretty to look at. I even like the songs in the movie too. Sadly, this movie does nothing for me. If you like musicals, I do recommend it if you are curious. RIP Lynn Cohen

Election
Date: 11/3/2020 Viewed: Criterion Blu-Ray Re-Watch Note: I have made a tradition to watch this movie on every election day for the last 15+ years now. Election is one of the best comedy movies of the 1990s in my opinion and it never gets old when I always revisit it. The humor is absolutely hilarious and the general message about voting is spot on. This movie is a satire of the American voting system by using a high school setting and the students in the movie represent how most typical Americans don't really care about politics when it comes to voting. I also love how this movie points how the flaws in America's democracy by showing that the dirtiest of people comes out on top. This movie pretty much foreshadows both the 2000 and 2016 elections if you ask me. The acting in this movie is great because everyone does a wonderful job of playing believable characters. Matthew Broderick knocks it out of the park by playing an unlikable social studies teacher that is going through a mid-life crisis. It's funny to think that Matthew Broderick was in both a great and terrible movie (Inspector Gadget) back in 1999. I have nothing else to say, to be honest. Election is a smart and funny comedy that is timeless. I do highly recommend watching this movie.

A Creepshow Animated Special: Survivor Type/Twittering from the Circus of the Dead
Date: 10/31/2020 Viewed: Shudder First Viewing Note: I didn't know that this exists until yesterday. I always wanted to see an animated version of Creepshow for decades now and they finally made one. It's not the animated Creepshow that I wanted, but it's still not bad. The animation feels like a flash motion comic than traditional hand-drawn animation that is similar to the animated sequences in the original two Creepshow movies. The animation reminds me of the cut scenes in Twisted Metal: Head-on for the PS2 and PSP. However, they probably didn't have a big enough budget and it's only a special, not a full-length movie. The special has two stories and here's my opinion on them. Story 1: This is the best story out of the two because it was super interesting. You have a main character that is stuck on an island in the middle of the Ocean and he is trying to not die from hunger. I do like the gross moments in this story because you get to see someone who is forced to eat himself alive to survive. Kiefer Sutherland does a great job of voicing the main character. Story 2: I almost hated this story at first because this story focuses on a teenage girl who is tweeting about her life. I was like "Who the hell cares about this person" because it takes a while before anything interesting happens. Once they show up at the circus is when things start to get good. The message of the story starts to become loud and clear on what they are trying to say about social media. The message of this story is how people always tweet about death for their own enjoyment. You also have a message about people being distracted by their own social media feed while other people are in trouble. I would like this story more if the main character was likable. Joey King still did a good job of voicing the main role though. Overall, A Creepshow Animated Special is pretty decent and I do recommend it if you are curious. I still hope for a full length animated Creepshow movie one day.
